This portrait of a gentleman, in its original frame, is in country house conidtion which lends it a charm of its own. The sitter wears a small horseshoe around his neck, perhaps for luck, or perhaps signifiying a link to the racing world. Often such items in portrait were symbolic, linking to the person's trade or something special to them.
The frame is worn and the portait could be restored, but we rather love it as it is.
